The Beginner Puppy Owner

By far the most key fact about puppies and dogs that owners must understand is that dogs are pack animals and the human being must establish authority. You, the owner, are the "pack leader" and you must act the part.

Young puppies will use up a significant quantity of time trying to figure out where they fit into the chain of command. They generally do this by trying to establish their own domination. A few breeds are more dominant than others, for case, the terrier breeds. Some of the other breeds tend to be more subservient naturally.

When your puppy comes home you need to help him realize his place in the hierarchy. All of the individual members of the family unit are above him in the "pecking order" and he needs to be aware of that fact. This is not punishment at all and dogs actually prefer to be subservient to their owners. If your dog is to become happy and well-mannered member of your family unit this hierarchy must be recognized.

To be able to prove the domination you must abide by a few straightforward rules, if not your puppy will be receiving mixed signals and it will be more demanding for you to train him and he will be bewildered as to what you really want.

The top dog must all the time eat first. Do not let your puppy eat before you eat. If you are planning on eating about the same time as you plan to feed your puppy, you need to make your puppy wait until you are done. Or you can have your puppy eat at a entire distinct time than you eat. In the start you may want to call your puppy to you to get his food and make him wait before you give it to him. You are able to teach him to sit and then give him his food.

While touching and handling a dog provide effective signals to him about who is in charge. Your puppy may complain and wail or even act as if that you hurt him at the beginning when you handle him for simple grooming rituals. If he does this you must completely take no notice of him and be resolute on concluding. You have to always follow through with what you start with a puppy because he will realize rapidly when you really mean something and if you are wishy-washy he will get another perplexing sign.

When puppies are little they use their mouths to nip and nibble at things. You must stop this behavior immediately by giving him a quick "No" and a tap if necessary. The leader of the pack never allows nipping and you are the leader of the pack.

Probably the most critical thing with a puppy is to show him that you are the authoritarian leader of the pack so be wary of games such as "tug'o'war' where he could show some dominance. You must praise his good behavior with words and treats and disregard his poor behavior as you start on obedience training. If you follow these simple tips you will have a well-behaved doggie citizen.
